Army Correspondence Courses
Through Army correspondence courses, the United States Army provides all its soldiers the opportunity to receive formal education and training using a distance- learning format. Traditional education is not easily accessible to most soldiers given their military regimen, regular deployments, and relocation.
Career Advancement Through Army Correspondence Courses
The Army Correspondence Course Program is designed for military personnel who wish to continuously expand their skill set in hopes of professional advancement in their military career. Participants complete modules, thereby earning promotion points, specifically one promotion point for every five credit hours of course work completed.
Soldiers may choose from a wide range of Army correspondence courses. One option is to take courses relevant to their own Military Occupational Specialty (MOS). They can also pursue programs covering basic soldier skills and skill qualification development. Soldiers can also attend other classes not related to their MOS but may help them acquire new skill sets.
These correspondence courses for the Army will change as they rise through the ranks and take on greater responsibilities. Soldiers at levels E-4 and E-4 Promotable must take army correspondent courses that will prepare them for leadership positions.
Other correspondence courses are used as prerequisites for training. Soldiers signing up for advance training programs like the Warrior Leadership Course and Advanced Non-commissioned Officer Course must first take an Army correspondence course before they can attend classroom lectures.
Other Educational Programs
Other learning programs sponsored by the Army include the eArmyU, which allows those in military service to pursue college degrees over the Internet during off-duty periods. Under this scheme, soldiers take Arm
y correspondence courses to prepare themselves for a career outside the military, or to simply pursue personal interests and development.
Meanwhile, other soldiers take advantage of the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), which advances education relevant to the military way of life. Different DANTES programs offer career training and college courses to soldiers, using traditional learning methods, satellite courses, e-learning, and video. There are even courses that students can download to a PDA as well as Podcast classes.
